The Make Up Of A Tooth
A tooth is made up of two
parts, that which is above the gum line, the crown and that which is below the
gum line, the root.
The crown is the part that we all see when we smile, the part
that is white and when looked after well makes us all feel more confident with
our smile.
The root makes up approximately
two thirds of the tooth length and
is below the gum line.
Each tooth is made up of
different
tissues four in all, these
are enamel,
dentin, pulp and cementum.
Enamel is the part we see, it is the durable white covering which protects the teeth from wear
and tear. It is the hardest substance in the body and there fore is very useful
when you are chewing.
Looked after well it can last
your whole lifetime.
Dentin lies just below the enamel and it act as a support to
the enamel. It is a bone like substance and is yellow in colour. Nerve fibres
are carried in the dentine and these fibres act as the first defence and let
you know if some thing is not right with the tooth.
Pulp is the next layer, it is the very center of the tooth.
In it are the lymph and blood vessels and nerves. It is a soft tissue and it is
how the tooth receives nourishment and how the tooth transmits signals to your
brain.
Cementum is the means by which your teeth are
attached to the jaw. It covers the root of each tooth and helps to keep your
teeth stable in your month.
